Vegan L.A.: Babycakes and Plant Food for People

It is ridiculously easy to be vegan in Los Angeles. We have a ton of fresh fruits and vegetables and if you’re not into that Winking smile, there are a ton of places that make vegan food.

Today Severin and I hitched a ride downtown with my mom, who was going to work at the library. We could have easily caught a bus that goes straight there from Eagle Rock but we had the opportunity to carpool today, so we did.

We played tourists and saw things like Angels Flight, which is a 25c trolley to nowhere (or was it heaven?), Grand Central Market, which was crazy, and the Metro/occasionally above ground subway, which I’m obsessed with. I Red heart our (totally underrated) subway!

But you know what the coolest thing we saw was?

066spot the car?

Nope, not the cars racing at the X-Games in front of the Staples Center; though it was pretty funny that we found ourselves there. {those cars are fast, loud and scary!}

It was Babycakes! Imagine a vegan bakery! And one that doesn’t use refined sugar! I was in heaven. I seriously wanted one of everything but I convinced myself I’d be back since I live only a handful of miles away from it. Until then…an absolutely perfect maple donut and a delicious mocha chocolate cupcake.

But we didn’t stop there. I’m a sucker for deals and when I spotted some 50% off, day-old donuts I knew I had to have them. We ate them later (as snacks/lunch?) and they were amazing. GAH(!!!) I wish I could share them with you guys. You don’t think ‘vegan’ or ‘relatively healthy’ when you eat these. You don’t even think ‘is the mint chocolate chip frosting all over my face?’. You think ‘ohmygod donuts may be my new favorite food and I need more NOW’

Next time I want a sweet, I am coming straight here. I won’t be happy until I try one of everything. Good news though- I found this at the library! Open-mouthed smile

As if all that hadn’t been AWESOME enough, on the way home, after a pit stop at a new community market where I tried some (ick) acai juice, look where I found myself.

At the Vegan Cookout at Figueroa Produce! I loved thinking, yay! all these people are eating vegan food! The jackfruit tacos were as incredibly amazing as last time.

I know it’s not very ladylike but as I was using the lime to scoop up every last bit of jackfruit, I wished aloud that I had a bucketful of the jackfruit to eat. After witnessing this, Severin teased “Isn’t it ironic that you’re not eating animals but you eat like a pig?”. Bahaha. I thought that was hilarious and not ironic. And because he said that, I will leave you with this incriminating photo I took of my cat (who is very mean to me & responsible for scratches on my legs and arms) and Severin (traitor). They are so in love, it’s sick.Red heart

I’ve always wanted to go to babycakes! I can only imagine how amazing those donuts were. I love the sign in the shop that says “YAY! Everything is vegan! All the flavors look soooo good. I’m so jealous!

I suddenly feel the need to hit downtown LA! Imagine, a restaurant that is actually worth a drive from the westside…traffic dictates everything around here. Babycakes looks divine!

  5. Stephanie says:

All of that food is so gorgeous! And so are you…you’re absolutely beautiful, my friend! Anyway, I have never – not once in my life – thought that I want to go to L.A. I’m not anti-L.A. Just indifferent. But with food like that, I’m rethinking my stance and might have to become a fan.

I am so incredibly jealous of this adventure!! Those vegan baked goods look AMAZING. I am seriously obsessed with vegan sweets. I am amazed by how good they can be. Embrace your “piggy” appetite!! I sure do. I laughed when I read that part. You still look foxxxxy as ever, regardless of the amount you eat. The picture of Sev and your cat made me LOL too. They look like they are having a stare off.

  7. I am INSANELY jealous a) that you live in LA, b) that you went to Babycakes and c) how easy it is to be vegan there…….I might just have to move!

  8. Vegan doughnuts? SWOON.

Were they as good as DD? ;)

  9. Ma Ma Megan says:

  10. I have the baby cakes cookbook and I love it. It’s full of some amazing recipes.
