Awesomeness in the ‘Hood

Hey hey, how’s it going? Nice, nice, good to hear. Me? Well last week I was working a few 12 hour days babysitting and this week…nada. I really have no idea what happened but to be honest I’m glad I wasn’t asked to work again if only because holding a baby for 6-8 hour periods has absolutely killed my back. I currently feel like there is an elephant perched on one shoulder. A heavy one, not like a cute miniature one. I’m no weakling since I started weight-training but my back is in major pain because my five foot self just can’t handle carrying anything as big as me (no matter how cute and precious it may be). So I’ve been spending this week cleaning around the house and reading through Craigslist ads. And wishing I could work out. I did run a few times but it was so painful. Another notable accomplishment: at my brother’s baseball practice yesterday, during the kids vs. parents game, I managed to actually hit the ball! That was a surprise- when was the last time I even held a bat? I always say I run because I have no hand-eye coordination so I’m guessing this was pure luck!

Moving on from the complaining…there are a few things that are making me very happy to be in Los Angeles. For one thing, a VEGAN FAST FOOD drive-thru is opening up a few minutes away from me! Craaazy, right? I can’t wait! Another thing I am happy to be near is my beloved Taco Spot. I’ve gone twice in the past week with my family and both times ordered the Veggie Tacos even though the Guacamole Fries were calling to me. Next time I am getting those for sure!! Either way, everything here is delicioso!

Something else I love having in my town is Figueroa Produce, an amazing market that carries a ton of vegan items, local food and just interesting stuff. Their mission is “to bring our customers high-quality foods at discounted prices” [from their site]. They are just such friendly people and if they don’t have what you’re looking for, you just ask and they do what they can to order it!

I went there a little while ago with my dad. I had planned on biking but I have no helmet or lock- definitely have to fix that. I could have easily bussed or walked but I did not. #ecofail Next time I will, especially since every Tuesday night they have a food truck feast Highland Park Din Din A Go Go with always lots of veg options and even vegan cooking demonstrations! Today I went in because I had a coupon to use. I had been on Twitter the other day and saw that there was one of those local deals going on, you know like Groupon, Living Social, Yelp. This one was a $15 for $25 worth of food from Figueroa Produce, by Townloop (which is new and LA based). Some of the money I spent on the coupon/gift certificate went to a nearby elementary school which is awesome of course! A little more awesome is that I saved some money and had an excuse to visit my favorite market. I had one thing in mind-KOMBUCHA! See ya Pepsi, this is my new drug of choice!

I paid $16.78 for all this. Considering I usually savor my Kombuchas this should last me a while. I hope. When I run out, you better be stocked Fig Produce, because I will be back! I picked out only 5 because one should not live on Kombucha alone. I forced myself to pick up some food and am now excited to cook some quinoa; chili with the kidney beans; and chickpeas for CCKatie’s Blondie Batter Dip, which is AMAZING- go make it! The bananas my dad grabbed because now that he’s a runner and all (and 22lbs lighter than he was a couple months ago-whoot whoot!), he thrives on bananas. And don’t we all?

Tell me, what’s it like in your neighborhood? Does it fit in with your lifestyle?

  1. Orange County has a ton of overpriced restaurants that I would never eat at, but they do have a lot of vegetarian / vegan restaurants too that I like to enjoy :) That’s a great deal for all that stuff- especially since kombucha is so expensive!

  2. A vegan drive thru??!!!! Wow! Only in LA! That would be totally unheard of over here! That’s crazy cool…..i’d be there all the time!!

There’s a Whole Foods literally two blocks away (lol just typed “blogs” and had to hit ‘backspace’ a few times… silly me) from my house and MAN am I lucky. Or cursed (kidding) cause I spend so much of my money there. ;)
I heard of that drive-thru..need to check it out (but it’s a bit far from my house…hmm)
Oh and I totally thrive on ‘nanners, too. ;) Btw, I am assuming you’ve made CCk’s recipe for blondie “batter”, right? I’ve been meaning to try it but I ate up my last batch of chickpeas wayy too quickly as hummus.
